Who we are

StarAsk is an AI-powered bedtime story platform for parents. It is operated by an individual developer based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Contact: wesion.app@gmail.com

Who can use StarAsk

StarAsk is intended for use by parents and legal guardians aged 18 or over. By creating an account, you confirm that you are 18+ and that you are operating the service on behalf of yourself and your child. StarAsk is not intended for direct use by children.

Children's data and COPPA

We take the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) seriously. StarAsk is designed around a parent-account model: the account belongs to you, not to your child. Your child does not log in, does not have a profile, and does not directly interact with the service.

The only piece of information about your child that StarAsk stores is what you choose to enter as inputs when generating a story: a first name (or nickname) and an age range. We recommend using a nickname rather than a real name. We do not collect your child's last name, photo, school, address, phone number, or location.

We never knowingly collect personal information directly from a child under 13. If you believe a child has somehow created an account or that we have received information directly from a child, contact us at wesion.app@gmail.com and we will delete the information promptly.

Information we collect

When you sign in with Google, we receive:

• Your email address
• Your Google account ID (a unique identifier)
• Your name (as Google provides it)

When you generate a personalized story, we collect and store:

• The child's name you entered (you may use a nickname if you prefer)
• The story parameters: age range, topic, mood, voice preference
• The generated story text and audio file
• A timestamp

We also keep a log of how many stories you have generated, for the purpose of enforcing usage limits.

When you subscribe to a paid plan or purchase a credit pack, we receive from Stripe (and store) a customer ID, the plan you selected, the date of purchase, and your subscription status. We never see or store your full payment card number — that data lives only with Stripe.

How we use this information

• To generate personalized stories you can listen to and revisit later
• To enforce free-tier usage limits (so we can keep the service sustainable)
• To respond to support questions if you contact us

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers. We do not use your data to train any AI model.

Third-party services we use

To deliver StarAsk, we send your inputs to:

• Anthropic (Claude API) — generates the story text. The child's name and your topic/mood selections are sent to Anthropic to produce a story. Anthropic processes this data according to its own privacy and data-retention policies.
• ElevenLabs — converts story text into audio. The cleaned story text (without your child's name appearing separately from the story) is sent to ElevenLabs.
• OpenAI (DALL·E) — generates illustrations for Ask Why answers. The question topic (without your child's name) is sent to OpenAI to produce illustration imagery.
• Supabase — hosts our database and handles Google sign-in.
• Vercel — hosts our website and stores the generated audio files.
• Stripe — processes all subscription payments and credit pack purchases. When you upgrade or buy credits, Stripe collects and stores your payment information (card details, billing address) directly under its own privacy policy. StarAsk never sees or stores your full card number — we only receive a customer ID and the subscription status. Refunds and cancellations are also handled through Stripe.

We do not control how these third parties handle data once we send it. We choose providers that have public privacy policies and standard data-protection practices.

Audio file storage

Generated audio files are stored in cloud storage at randomized, unguessable URLs. Although the storage is technically accessible by URL, the URLs are not listed publicly and are revealed only to you within your account. We treat audio files as personal content belonging to you.

Your rights and controls

You can:

• View your story history on the "My Stories" page after signing in
• Delete individual stories from your history at any time, which permanently removes both the database record and the audio file
• Delete your entire account and all data by contacting us at wesion.app@gmail.com. We will permanently delete all your stories, audio files, usage logs, and profile within 30 days.

By default, we keep your stories and account data for as long as your account is active. If your account remains unused for 24 consecutive months, we may delete the associated data to minimize what we retain.

If you live in California, you have rights under the CCPA. If you live in the European Union, you have rights under the GDPR. These include the right to access, correct, delete, and port your data. Use the same contact email listed above to exercise any of these rights.

Cookies and analytics

StarAsk uses cookies only for authentication (so you stay signed in) and basic functioning. We do not use advertising trackers and we do not track you across other websites.

We do use Vercel Web Analytics to count anonymous page views and understand which parts of the site are used. Vercel Analytics does not use cookies, does not store IP addresses, and does not identify individual visitors. The data we see is aggregate: how many people visited a page, where they came from, and what country they are in. We use this only to improve the service.

We also use Sentry to detect application errors. Sentry may record technical details about an error (such as the page URL and a stack trace) but is configured to scrub personal identifiers before transmission.

AI-generated content disclaimer

Stories on StarAsk are generated by an AI model based on the inputs you provide. While we apply safety filters, AI-generated content can occasionally be unexpected or imperfect. You are responsible for previewing stories before sharing them with your child. We are not liable for any content the AI generates, beyond making reasonable safety efforts.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify signed-in users via the application. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects when changes were made.
